IGP Ochola Appoints Nuwabiine New Traffic Police Director

The inspector General of Police Martin Okoth Ochola appointed commissioner of police CP Nuwabiine Lawrence as the new Director Traffic and Road Safety.

In a police message dated 29th December 2020 and sent to all Units & Directors, CP Nuwabiine replaces CP Mugisha Bazil who leaves Traffic & Road Safety to Human Resource Department.

Nuwabine rose to fame when he was still Kampala Metropolitan traffic police commander.To control road accidents in Kampala, he introduced no drink and drive operations commonly known as”Kawunyemu” where a number of motorists arrested in such offences had to pay heavy fines .

His career went into limbo after falling out with former IGP Gen Kale Kayihura who transferred to police headquarters in Naguru pending deployment.

Mugisha has been Ag Director Traffic and Road Safety since February 2020 replacing Dr. Steven Kasiima.

Recently, top police positions fell vacant after President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni refused to renew five of the seven police directors whose contracts had expired.

The likes of Erasmus Twaruhukwa, the former Legal Director Uganda Police Force, Joseph Mugisa, the Former Director Fire and Emergency Rescue Services, Dr. Steven Kasiima, the Former Director Traffic, Haruna Isabirye, the Police Attaché to New York, Lemmy Musa Twinomugisha, the former Director Welfare and Production and Francis Rwego, the former Interpol Special Representative to the African Union had to retire from police service.
