Parliament Staff Relocates To Kingdom Kampala Mall

The Parliament of Uganda has started moving some of its staff to tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia’s Kingdom Kampala Mall.

According to the communication from the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige, the transition to move staff is planned to “With effect from Thursday September 2, 2021, parliamentary staff have been directed to move to the Kingdom Kampala, to secure workplaces for the leadership of Committees, Members of Parliament with Disabilities, Elderly Members of Parliament and furthermore add on the quantity of Committee rooms.” reads a memo.

Throughout recent years, Parliament has been wrestling with office space to oblige the rising number of Members of Parliament and staff. Accordingly, the Parliamentary Commission chose to lease office space at the Kingdom Kampala building for its MPs for a period of two years.

By hiring Kingdom Kampala, space will now be adequate for MPs as they await the completion of the Parliamentary chambers.

“We will have adequate space for all MPs, they have been sharing offices, and it is expected that each MP can now have their own space,” said the Clerk to Parliament.

The UGX 206 billion Parliamentary chambers being constructed by ROKO is expected to host 600 members of parliament.

The building was meant to be completed early this year, but the COVID-19 pandemic affected the construction works.

Parliament has since allocated this space to Department of Litigation and Compliance, General Counsel to Parliament and Communication and Public Affairs.

Department of Clerks, Budget Office, Corporate Planning and Strategy, Research Services, Legislative and Procedural Services and Administrative and Transport Logistics.

This excludes Directors and Assistant Directors of the respective departments.

The Clerk said temporal arrangement is expected to last until the completion of the construction of the UGX. 200billion Parliament chambers.
