Huge Investment: Bongobongo Uganda Injects UGX 500M Into Dewilo Fish farm

Lira: Bongobongo Uganda Advocates, a company operating a gaming franchise in Uganda, seeks to extend its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) over the coming years to ensuring that sports betting and online gaming remain socially responsible and fun activities.

However, in a bid to expand their Corporate Social Responsibility, the company has also taken a move to venture into aquaculture in Uganda.

By venturing into aquaculture , the company’s main focus is on environmental conservation and the financial empowerment of their customers.

“As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility activities that coincide with the international customer service week, we are going to dig a borehole, plant 1200 trees all over Lira District with the support of the local community, and thereafter hand over the Dewilo Fish Farm,” Felix Owilo, the Bongobongo Country Manager, said.

He noted that the company’s CSR project is worth five hundred million Uganda shillings (UShs500,000,000).

Owilo revealed that Dewilo Fish Farm consists of 20 ponds that will provide over 100,000 fish annually at full capacity.

The fish farm employs locals at various levels right from digging the ponds to catering for the fish until they are mature enough for harvest.

He reasoned that since fish is one of the biggest exports for Uganda, the fish farm will not only employ locals but also enrich the environment through training locals in fish farming, which will in turn generate tax revenue for government when the fish products are exported.

On his part, Mr. Andrew Kitamirike, the Marketing Manager Bongobongo Uganda, stated that the Dewilo Fish Farm is just one of the many projects they have within Uganda.

He pledged to support Dewilo Fish Farm by providing inputs such as fish feeds, free training for the community.

Kitamirike encouraged the youth to embrace the tree-planting drive and urged them to acquire skills from the fish farm because by doing so they will be able to earn a living elsewhere.

He requested the government not to levy heavy taxes on animal feeds because this will hike the costs of operation for farmers.

The LC 1 Chairperson Amuca village, Mr. Walter Okabo hailed the company for the initiative, saying that it is a welcome development that will help in fighting poverty amongst the locals.

“The is a pioneer community project and residents are very grateful to Bongobongo Uganda for gifting them with Dewilo Fish Farm,”Okabo said.

He also said that he believes the youth will be the greatest beneficiaries, because they will be employed, learn, and possibly set up their own fish ponds.

“The fish farm is going to bring us tourists from other villages that need to learn fish farming,” Okabo added.

He also noted that the nutrition issues will be tackled since fish will be affordable and readily available within the community for consumption.

He concluded by urging more companies to not only take money from their customers but also give back to communities just as Bongobongo Uganda has done.

Ms. Fiona Achayo, the Dewilo Fish Farm Chief Executive Officer (CEO), said that; “We started in 2018 and seeing the project transform from a bush to a farm with 20 ponds is a dream come true. I am so grateful to Bongobongo for believing in and investing in the Dewilo Fish Farm project, which is benefiting many locals, especially the women in the community.”

While officially handing over the Dewilo Fish Farm project and the donated items which included fish feeds, tree seedlings and solar powered security cameras, Mr.Alex Enyang, the deputy director of Research, Vetting and Profiling in the Office of the President, encouraged the locals to utilise the project so as to gain knowledge on fish farming with an aimof bettering their lives
