International Forests Day: Fairventures Worldwide, Ndejje University Collaborate To Plant Over 2,000 Trees

Fairventures Worldwide, non-profit organization based in Stuttgart, Germany has collaborated with Ndejje University in a tree planting event to commemorate the International Day of Forests.

Under the theme, Forests and Health, the event emphasizes the importance of healthy ecosystems in our daily lives where 2,000 indigenous tree seedlings consisting of Cordia millenii, Albizia coriaria, Terminalia, Maesopsis eminii, and Grevillea robusta will be planted in the designated area to ensure species diversification.

We’ve learnt that representatives from Ndejje University and Fairventures Worldwide will educate the local community about the health benefits, values, and roles of trees.

Importantly, among other guests, the event will be graced by the Executive Director of the National Forestry Authority (NFA) as the chief guest.

In 2012, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly declared March 21st to be the International Day of Forests. The day celebrates and raises awareness towards the importance of trees and forests.

Member nations are encouraged to participate in local, national, international and other tree-related activities such as tree planting campaigns.

This year, Fairventures Worldwide has partnered with the Ndejje University community, management and students on a tree planting event to commemorate the International Day of Forests. The event will take place on March 21, 2023, with the goal of restoring 5-acres of land in Kiyanda-Ndejje, Luweero District.

Fairventures Worldwide (FVW) is an international NGO that combines sustainable reforestation using fast growing indigenous tree species in agroforestry systems, food production and value chain development, ensuring income generation for small holder farmers and regeneration of degraded landscapes.

Currently, Fairventures is undertaking restoration projects with both private and public entities such as Makerere University, the National Scouts Association, Bethany Land Institute, and the Fort Portal Tourism City Council.

Previously, FVW organised massive community tree planting events at the Kaazi Scouts Forest Reserve in Busabala and Fort Portal Tourism City as part of the Re-Greening Fort Portal campaign and restored another degraded landscape in Bunyama-Mukono, with both community members and students from learning institutions serving as key planters.

Ndejje University has the Faculty of Environment and Agricultural Sciences (FEAS) which was established in response to the growing need for trained Environment, Agriculture, and Natural resource managers to provide solutions to the challenges of environmental degradation and sustainable development.

The vision of this faculty is to become a centre of excellence in teaching, research and community outreach in the field of sustainable agriculture, forestry, environment and natural resources. With such partnerships, the faculty will be able to achieve its mission of producing all round natural resource stewardship that is effectively, efficiently and profitably managed, based on sustainability.

Ndejje University through its faculty FEAS seeks to address the escalating degradation and contribute to the conservation of the environment and natural resource base and ecosystem services.

The collaboration between Fairventures Worldwide and Ndejje University is seen as an essential step towards developing and strengthening synergies in climate mitigation, forests, and tree management, particularly as an institution participating in forest and climate change-related activities.

The half-day programme will begin at 8:00 AM and conclude at 1:30 PM.

It should be noted that Ndejje University is the Oldest Private and Chartered university established in 1992. The University is owned by the six Anglican Dioceses of Central Buganda and provides a wide spectrum of Science, Engineering and Arts courses at both the Kampala and Luweero campuses

Fairventures Worldwide is a non-profit organization based in Stuttgart, Germany. We combine forestry and modern technologies to reforest degraded areas in the tropics. In cooperation with smallholder farmers in Indonesia and Uganda, we create sustainable forests from timber and food crops. These provide local people with a secure income, help to preserve biodiversity and counteract climate change.
