The Association of Fishers and Lake Users of Uganda (AFALU) has officially announced the date for its Annual General Assembly, set to take place on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Gaba Beach Hotel in Gaba.
The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will serve as a significant gathering for the association’s members, partners, and stakeholders.
In an advert addressed to all concerned parties, AFALU’s General Secretary, Mr. Makanga Moses, extended formal invitations and highlighted key discussions that will take place during the assembly.
One of the main items on the agenda is the review of proposed amendments to the AFALU constitution.
These amendments are aimed at strengthening the association’s governance framework, enhancing its service delivery to members, and aligning with changing trends within the fisheries and water usage sectors.

Understanding AFALU: The Voice of Fishers and Lake Users in Uganda
AFALU, established as a non-governmental organization, serves as a critical body advocating for the rights, welfare, and sustainability of Uganda’s lake users and the broader fishing community. Its membership is composed of individuals and entities engaged in various aspects of lake use, including fishing, transportation, tourism, and conservation.

4. Conflict Resolution: The association plays a mediation role in resolving disputes among lake users. Whether conflicts arise between fishers or between fishers and local authorities, AFALU steps in to negotiate and find peaceful solutions.
5. Economic Empowerment: AFALU supports fishers by connecting them to markets and encouraging value-added processes that improve their income. It also lobbies for better working conditions, improved infrastructure for fishing communities, and access to financial services.
