The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has refuted allegations made by the Uganda Law Society (ULS) regarding the alleged abduction of Maj (Rtd) Ronald Iduli, a lawyer associated with Dr. Col (Rtd) Kizza Besigye. In a statement, the UPDF criticized the ULS for issuing claims without proper investigation, calling for greater professionalism and objectivity in handling such matters.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Patrick Onyango, Maj (Rtd) Iduli was arrested over allegations of failing to pay rent for ten months and threatening his landlady with violence. The UPDF described his behavior as unacceptable, emphasizing the importance of individuals fulfilling their financial and legal obligations regardless of their status or profession.
Further investigations revealed that Maj (Rtd) Iduli was found in possession of military attire beyond what is permitted upon retirement. The UPDF highlighted that regulations regarding the retention of military uniforms are clear and that as a former military lawyer, Iduli should be well aware of the legal restrictions.
“The UPDF condemns the retired Major’s actions and urges all citizens to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure the law takes its course,” the statement read.
The UPDF also dismissed the ULS’s allegations as politicized and misinformed, calling for greater diligence before making public statements. The institution underscored its commitment to upholding the rule of law and pledged to work with the police to ensure the matter is resolved transparently.
Maj (Rtd) Iduli’s case underscores the broader need for accountability and professionalism in addressing disputes. The UPDF urged citizens to respect the legal process and avoid sensationalizing issues to mask personal misconduct.
