New Kid On The Block: Ariyo Katunda Shakes Political Giants In Sheema Municipality

The political landscape in Sheema Municipality is undergoing a seismic shift as 24-year-old Ariyo Chrispas Katunda emerges as a formidable contender in the race for Member of Parliament for the 2026–2031 term. His youthful energy, innovative ideas, and widespread support from the youth and key stakeholders have sent shockwaves through the political establishment, forcing veteran politicians to rethink their strategies.

Dr Tumwesigye

One of the most significant developments is the retreat of Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, a political heavyweight and former MP of Sheema Municipality. Widely regarded as a seasoned figure in the region, Dr. Tumwesigye has declared his intention to contest for Sheema North, effectively abandoning the municipality in the face of mounting political pressure from Chrispas Katunda’s rising popularity.

Kateshumbwa

This move has left the incumbent MP, Hon. Kateshumbwa Dicksons, in a precarious position as he now faces a highly motivated and dynamic opponent in Chrispas. Known for his leadership acumen and commitment to youth empowerment, Chrispas has galvanized the support of young voters and community leaders alike, positioning himself as the change Sheema Municipality needs.

A Proven Leader at 24

Chrispas Katunda’s leadership journey began early, serving as deputy head boy at Rwabutura Primary School and later as head prefect during his A-level studies at Sheema Premier School. He carried this spirit into his university days, where he served as the GRC of the Faculty of Business Administration at the university.

He attained a Bachelor of Arts in Human Resource Management and is currently a finalist student at Kampala International University, pursuing a master’s degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Human Resource Management.

Today, he serves as the interline chairman of Victors Investment Club-Mbarara and treasurer of Mbarara Corporate Facilities Managers, overseeing over 1,000 members combined.

Through his ventures, Xpress Facilities Management and SMUT Ushering Services, Chrispas has created over 250 jobs for youth, directly addressing unemployment and inspiring a new generation of leaders. Voters who are tired of rhetoric and want substantive change resonate deeply with his views on grassroots development and youth empowerment.

The Catalyst for Change

Chrispas’ entry into the race has not only reshaped the electoral dynamics but also ignited hope among residents of Sheema Municipality. His campaign has focused on actionable plans to uplift the community through job creation, education, and infrastructural development.

Dr. Tumwesigye’s decision to shift his focus to Sheema North is seen by many as a testament to the political heat brought about by Chrispas’ candidacy. The move clears the way for a direct showdown between Chrispas and Kateshumbwa, who now faces the challenge of defending his record against a fresh and innovative vision for Sheema Municipality.

Backing from Youth and Stakeholders

Chrispas Katunda’s campaign is backed by a majority of the youth, who see him as one of their own and a champion of their aspirations. His experience as a communications specialist, working with notable figures such as Hon. Prof. Mushemeza Elijah Dickens, Hon. Jacklet Atuhaire, Hon. Min. Balam Barugahara, and Former Minister Hon. Mary Karooro Okurut, has given him the exposure and skills to navigate the complex political terrain.

In a statement, Chrispas emphasized, “This campaign is about the people of Sheema Municipality. It’s about creating opportunities for the youth, improving infrastructure, and ensuring every resident benefits from impactful development. I am not here to intimidate anyone but to offer solutions that will transform lives.”

The Battle Ahead

As the race heats up, the focus will now be on whether Chrispas Katunda can maintain his momentum and unseat Kateshumbwa Dicksons. With Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye bowing out of the contest in Sheema Municipality, all eyes are on the young challenger who has disrupted the status quo and brought new energy to the political arena.

Chrispas Katunda’s ability to inspire and unite the youth, coupled with his leadership experience and commitment to development, makes him a strong contender. Whether he can translate this support into a decisive victory remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Sheema Municipality’s 2026 election will be one for the history books.
