Bobiwine Slams NUP Leaders For Abandoning Struggle,Families Of Fallen Comrades

National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi has condemned some party leaders for neglecting the families of members who lost their lives during the party’s struggle for political change. Kyagulanyi expressed his disappointment during a special mass held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church Cathedral in Kitovu, Masaka, to honor Frank Ssenteza, a civilian bodyguard who died under tragic circumstances during the 2021 general election campaigns.

Ssenteza was reportedly run over by a military police truck, registration number H4DF 2382, while the NUP team faced resistance from security forces in Busega, a Kampala suburb. The incident occurred as the campaign convoy was heading to Bukoto South to support Dr. Twaha Kagabo’s parliamentary bid.

Kyagulanyi criticized leaders like Dr. Kagabo, accusing them of betraying the NUP struggle after benefiting from the sacrifices made by comrades like Ssenteza. “Ssenteza gave his life for many leaders who are now in offices but cannot spare time to visit his family or remember his sacrifice,” Kyagulanyi lamented.

He commended Masaka Diocese Bishop Serverus Jjumba and the church administration for organizing the mass to honor Ssenteza. The event brought together supporters and leaders of the NUP who reflected on the cost of their political struggle.

Florence Nakyejjwe, Ssenteza’s mother, expressed gratitude to the NUP leadership for standing by her family. “You have done everything a son would do. We appreciate your unwavering support since we lost Ssenteza,” she said.

Fr. Andrew Kyamufumba, the administrator of Our Lady of Sorrows Cathedral, urged political leaders to remain steadfast in their fight for the rights of Ugandans. He called for solidarity in opposing the oppression faced by many citizens.

The mass served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals like Ssenteza in the fight for democracy and justice. However, it also highlighted the growing divide between the party’s ideals and the actions of some leaders who have assumed political office.
