Security Frees Nyanzi As 40 Teso NUP Elders Are Arrested

Security operatives have released National Unity Platform (NUP) head of mobilization, Fred Nyanzi, after four days of incommunicado detention. His release follows claims by NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, that military operatives abducted over 40 elderly party members after a meeting and later abandoned them at Wandegeya Police Station.

Kyagulanyi condemned the arrests, calling them a sign of the government’s growing fear. “This is evidence that they are panicking and in great fear of the people,” he stated, vowing to take legal action against the security forces involved.

According to Kyagulanyi, Nyanzi was held in the custody of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), where he allegedly suffered torture before being dumped near his home. “Thank you all for raising your voices,” Kyagulanyi said, crediting public pressure for Nyanzi’s release.

Police Raid on NUP Offices

The arrests and Nyanzi’s detention occurred against a backdrop of heightened tensions between the opposition and the government, with security forces raiding NUP offices in Kavule and Kamwokya on Friday. The police claimed the operation was aimed at investigating reports of “unauthorized military drills” allegedly conducted at NUP premises.

Security agencies cited concerns over a recent NUP event where supporters wore red uniforms and berets in a parade. Authorities claim the party is engaging in “illegal military training” activities, though NUP leaders strongly deny the allegations.

Kyagulanyi accused security forces of planting evidence and blocking roads around the party headquarters. “Security officials are breaking into my office after spending hours checking other offices (and perhaps planting things). They’ve blocked all roads around,” he posted on social media.

Growing Political Tensions

The arrests and security raids come as Uganda heads toward the 2026 general elections, with NUP positioning itself as the main opposition force against President Yoweri Museveni’s government. The Uganda Police Force has yet to provide details on the arrests or findings from the raid, only stating that further updates will be communicated in due course.

The fate of the 40 arrested elders remains unclear, as NUP leaders continue to demand their unconditional release. The latest crackdown has drawn criticism from human rights groups and opposition supporters, who accuse the government of using security forces to intimidate political opponents.

As political tensions escalate, all eyes remain on how authorities handle opposition activities in the lead-up to the elections.
