Popular Ugandan singer Shafiq Jjingo commonly known as Fik Gaza was re-arrested on Tuesday shortly after being granted bail by the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court, where he had been facing robbery charges.
The court had earlier released the artist on a cash bail of UGX 1 million, with additional conditions requiring each of his sureties to commit UGX 10 million in non-cash. Fik Gaza was also ordered to surrender his passport and seek court permission for any future travel plans.
The musician, who had spent nearly a week in detention, had just stepped out of the courtroom when plain-clothed security operatives intercepted and detained him again. Eyewitnesses described the scene as swift and tense, with the artist quickly whisked away in an unmarked vehicle.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango confirmed the re-arrest, stating that Fik Gaza is now facing fresh charges linked to other robbery incidents in Wakiso District.
“He has pending robbery-related cases in Wakiso which require him to appear before court this week,” SSP Onyango said, adding that investigations are still ongoing.
Fik Gaza’s legal team has not yet issued an official statement regarding the re-arrest. The singer’s fans have expressed shock and disappointment, flooding social media with messages of support and calls for a fair trial.
More details are expected to emerge as the new charges unfold in the coming days.
