Several Ugandans with savings in the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) have vowed to stage protests on Monday July 13th, 2020 across the country, to express their dejection with the Fund for denying them access to their savings during the this Coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown.

Under their umbrella group ‘NSSF Savers Forum Uganda, the savers have since petitioned to the NSSF Managing Director Richard Byarugaba informing him of their intentions to hold peaceful demontrations.The letter reads in part thus;

Our Ref P/GLSD /2020T

TO THE MANAGING DIRECTOR, NATIONAL SOCIAL SECURITY FUND, KAMPALA-UGANDA

DearSir.

RE: PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION ON MONDAY 13T, JULY,2020

The above subject refers.

That we the members who save with National Social Security Fund (NSSF) across the Country Uganda, do write to inform you about our National wide Peaceful demonstration at all NSSF Branches on Monday 13, July 2020 from 11:00Am for the following reasons;

1. That since March, 2020 when Corona Virus attacked the world most of us lost jobs, income and survival but you have continuous neglected our request to have part of our savings so as to survive during the pandemic. As a result some of our members have passed away due to hunger diseases and others are still starving with no food, shelter, medical care and basic needs of life.

2. That you have appeared on several media platforms informing the public that we members who save with NSSF cannot access any of our savings during this difficult time with an intention of wishing us death so that you can continue enjoying our funds at will as you have been doing.

3.You have been saying that there is no law which allows members to get part of their savings but you at the same time gave over Shs800m to the Covid-19 task force without any law to support your actions, while denying the members the same assistance and opportunity to survive.

4. You misdirected the Minister of Finance when you wrote a letter to him claiming that it’s not proper for us members to get 20% of our savings rendering us restitutes with no Electricity water, TV, house rent among others which were all disconnected due to lack of funds which were expected from part of our savings held up with you.”

However, although the management of NSSF received the letter from the savers who have vowed to demonstrate, they are yet to issue an official communication about the matter.
