The Minister of State for Labour Mwesigwa Rukutana has been charged with attempted murder, malicious damage and theft of a gun.

His three bodyguards were also charged with attempted murder and their file was forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

Following his defeat to Naome Kabasharira, Rukutana turned chaotic and in the scuffle, he grabbed a gun from one of his bodyguards and allegedly injured one person who was rushed to hospital in critical condition whereas one vehicle was also destroyed.

President Museveni on Monday indicated that Mr. Rukutana, who spent the weekend in detention at Mbarara Police Station will be charged with attempted murder.

The President said this via his twitter account on Monday morning.

“The cheating in the NRM Primaries is over. Those who beat People, like in Bukono, are all in jail or on the run. Minister Rukutana is in jail and will be prosecuted…” reads part of the tweet.

Meanwhile, the Spokesperson of Police for Rwizi region Samson Kasasira earlier confirmed that the Director for CID has also found out that the injuries sustained by the victim aren’t from a bullet but from an object that is yet to be identified.

Rukutana was arrested on Saturday following a loud outcry from the public after the clip showing the incident surfaced on social media.
