Panic At Kawempe Police Station As Suspect Tests Positive For Coronavirus

Kawempe Police Station in Kampala has temporarily been closed by authorities after one of the suspects in the cells tested positive for Coronavirus.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police Station, Patrick Onyango the incident happened on Wednesday when one of the suspects, a male teen of 15 years who had been arrested on allegations of defiling a three-year-old girl was found positive of the virus.

“The investigations into the alleged defilement were concluded and the suspect was produced at Nabweru court and remanded to juvenile remand home at Naguru. Officials at the remand home demanded for COVID 19 negative certificate before he could be admitted. Police took him for tests and results came back positive,”Onyango said.

“The child is yet to be transferred to Entebbe Grade B Hospital for treatment.”

The police mouthpiece explained that Ministry of Health officials have taken samples off all police staff, family members and all suspects in their custody and are waiting for results as well as tracing for contacts of the victim.

“The Police station and barracks will be closed for disinfection. At the moment, we are not registering new cases at the station but attending to emergencies only. We appeal to members of the public who want Police services or have cases to register to go to the nearest Police Station within their localities or any Police station under Kawempe,”he said.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health confirmed 201 new Coronavirus cases in Uganda.

Uganda’s confirmed cases are now at 4,101 with 1,876 recoveries and 46 deaths since March when the first case of Coronavirus was confirmed in Uganda.
