There was a sigh of relief among the bus owners and travelers plying on Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara high way after Uganda National Roads Authority UNRA Executive Director, Allen Kagina ordered for the reopening of the Katonga Bridge on Masaka Road for buses usage.
“Reference is made to deflection monitoring of the old existing bridge carried out on 1st September 2023, which indicated deflections well within the allowable limits under 30 tonne loading,” excerpts of the letter read. ” Consequently, the bridge should be opened for all buses with precautionary measures,” the statement read.
In May, Uganda National Roads Authority assessed the damage to repair the Katonga bridge along Kampala- Masaka highway. Part of the bridge collapsed after the waters of River Katonga rose. UNRA advised motorists from Kampala to use the route going through Mpigi – Kanoni – Maddu – Ssembabule to Masaka.sr
