One person has died on the spot and 16 others are nursing severe wounds from an accident in Bubanzi village, Buvuma town council.

The deceased has been identified as Julius Kwanya, an employee of Buvuma Oil Palm Uganda.

Kwanya and the injured who are also employees of Buvuma Oil Palm Uganda were on Saturday night while returning to their quarters involved in an accident. They were travelling in a Canter truck registration number UAZ 121S.

Eyewitnesses said that the truck failed to climb a hill and overturned several times. The injured were rushed to Kawolo hospital in critical condition.

The Deputy Resident Commissioner Juma Kigongo says that due to lack of transport on the island, they struggled to refer the injured to Kawolo hospital.

Haruna Wamala, the Kawolo hospital administrator says that Kwanya succumbed to wounds and internal bleeding. He notes that two of the victims have been further referred to Mulago hospital.

The Buvuma Member of Parliament Robert Migadde asked the government to fulfil its promise of buying a boat ambulance to take patients to Buvuma hospital.
