The Italian government has announced plans to fund the construction of a railway line in Uganda.

This was announced on Monday, May 20, 2024, by the Italian Ambassador to Uganda, Mauro Massoni, while meeting President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at State House, Entebbe.

According to President Museveni, the proposal will ensure the reconstruction of the railway line from Tororo to Majanji, along with a port at Majanji in the eastern region of Uganda.

“I welcome the proposal, as this railway will facilitate trade from Northern Uganda and the neighboring countries,” President Museveni said.

Currently, Uganda is set to commence the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway from the Kenyan border to Kampala.

“The construction of the railway from Tanzania will take some time. In the meantime, we can utilize the lake route through Majanji Island to Tororo. I welcome this idea,” President Museveni said.
