Fire has gutted the boys dormitory at Mbarara Secondary School.

The fire that started at 10:30am destroyed Nyerere dormitory which houses S1, S2, and S3 students. The fire destroyed mattresses, clothes, books, shoes, and basins worth millions of Shillings.

Monica Ashaba, the Deputy Headteacher in charge of Academics says that the students were attending campaigns to elect student leaders when the fire broke out.

Ashaba says that the students combined efforts to stop the fire from spreading further in vain. It was however stopped by the intervention of the Police Fire Brigade.

She says that it is not clear what sparked off the fire, but they will wait for the police to investigate and come with a detailed report.

According to Ashaba, there were no injuries or death recorded since the students were not in the dormitory.

One of the students who preferred anonymity said they were attending campaigns when they saw smoke coming out and when they rushed to find out what was happening, they found the building burning.

Abel Ayorekiye, the Deputy Headteacher in charge of Welfare says they have sent the day scholars back home to assess the property that was damaged by the fire.

The Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson Samson Kasasira says that they have started inquiries into the cause of the fire.
