When it comes to flying, there are unspoken rules of etiquette that can make a significant difference in the comfort and experience of both yourself and your fellow passengers. In a survey conducted by the travel search engine Kayak, 1,000 people were asked about these unspoken rules, revealing valuable insights into proper aeroplane etiquette. Here are six rules that you should always follow when flying:

1. Reclining Seats

While 88% of travellers believe it is acceptable to recline your seat, a third of respondents feel that it should be reserved for long-haul or overnight flights. It’s essential to be considerate of the space and comfort of the person behind you.

2. Armrest Sharing

According to 57% of respondents, armrests are meant to be shared, especially for the person in the middle seat. Avoid claiming both armrests, as it can make the flight uncomfortable for your seatmates.

3. Keeping Socks On

The majority of participants agreed that keeping your socks on during a flight is a good practice. This helps maintain cleanliness and a hygienic environment for everyone on board.

4. Avoiding Strong-Smelling Foods

A staggering 92% of travellers find it inappropriate to bring foods with strong smells onto an aeroplane. Be mindful of your fellow passengers and opt for odourless or non-offensive snacks.

5. Using Headphones

Nearly 70% of people believe it is impolite to watch or listen to something without headphones during a flight. Be respectful of others’ need for a quiet and peaceful journey by using headphones when enjoying in-flight entertainment or listening to music.

6. Respecting Personal Space

Most respondents emphasized the importance of respecting personal space. Never put your feet on the seat in front of you, as this invades the personal space of the passenger sitting there.
