A prayer gathering that had been planned in honour of veteran opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye at Rubaga Cathedral was on Tuesday unexpectedly called off, with organisers offering limited explanation for the last-minute decision.

The event had been organised by a section of his supporters and opposition activists, who said it was meant to provide spiritual encouragement and solidarity to Dr Besigye as he navigates ongoing political and legal pressures.

The prayers were anticipated to attract a sizeable number of well-wishers, including political leaders and members of the public.

However, attendees who turned up at the cathedral were informed that the programme would no longer take place as scheduled. Organisers cited unspecified “unforeseen circumstances” but stopped short of giving detailed reasons for the postponement.

Sources close to the planning team hinted at possible logistical and security considerations, although no official confirmation was given regarding the exact cause of the cancellation.

Authorities at the Kampala Archdiocese did not immediately release a public statement clarifying the situation. Cathedral officials reportedly indicated that the decision followed internal consultations but declined to provide further comment.

The development sparked disappointment among some of Dr Besigye’s supporters, with a few questioning whether outside influence may have contributed to the move. They urged both church leaders and organisers to provide clear communication to prevent speculation.

By Tuesday evening, no new date had been announced. Organisers said discussions were ongoing and assured supporters that an update would be issued once fresh arrangements are agreed upon.
