The Commissioner for the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps (NSPC), Ms. Hellen Seku, has urged students in the Busoga sub-region to prioritize discipline, self-respect, and informed decision-making as key measures in preventing HIV/AIDS.

Seku made the remarks during a visit to Jinja Secondary School, where she addressed students on the importance of avoiding risky behaviors and focusing on their education.

She particularly encouraged girls to remain committed to their studies, resist peer pressure, and make thoughtful life choices until they are ready for relationships.

Quoting the Bible (Hosea 4:6), Seku cautioned that lack of knowledge can have destructive consequences for individuals and communities.

She further emphasized the need for a strong reading culture among learners, noting that academic success is closely tied to research and continuous learning.

“If you don’t research and you don’t read, you will always be the last, while those who read and research will always shine,” she said, urging Senior Four and Senior Six candidates to strive for excellence.

Beyond academics, Seku highlighted the importance of environmental cleanliness in schools. She called on students to maintain hygiene in classrooms, toilets, and bathrooms, avoid littering, and take part in tree planting initiatives.

She also commended the school administration for maintaining a clean environment and encouraged students to uphold discipline and responsibility.

Seku paid tribute to teachers for their role in shaping the nation, describing them as patriotic individuals who continue to serve despite limited resources.

“A teacher made me who I am today,” she said, urging students to appreciate their educators and remain focused on achieving their goals.

Jinja Secondary School head teacher, Isaac Balimusangayo, raised concerns about the institution’s aging infrastructure, noting that many buildings require urgent renovation.

He appealed to the government for support in rehabilitating the facilities to improve the learning environment.

In response, Seku pledged immediate intervention, including renovation of existing structures and support for new construction. She also assured the school of efforts to secure a bus to ease student transportation challenges.

Seku is currently undertaking a seven-day monitoring and evaluation tour of schools and institutions across Busoga to promote patriotism, education, and youth empowerment.
