Uganda Takes Higher Steps In Nuclear Energy Strategy With IAEA Support

The Minister of State for Energy Hon. Okaasai Opolot has said that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will assist Uganda’s nuclear energy strategy by reviewing the country’s communication strategy, conducting workshops on nuclear power plant contracting, financing, site selection, and providing training on funding requirements.

He made these remarks on Friday, March 1, 2024, while closing the weeklong IAEA Expert Mission on Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Strategy at Hotel Africana, Kampala, and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to this ambitious program.

Uganda is taking concrete steps to enhance its nuclear energy strategy with expert guidance from the IAEA.
“These initiatives will ensure Uganda’s nuclear energy development prioritizes safety and sustainability. With the IAEA’s expertise, we are confident in taking these next steps towards a secure energy future for our nation,” Okaasai said.

He also emphasized the significance of developing a strong, gender-balanced scientific staff.
“I urge both young women and men to pursue careers in the nuclear field,” he said.

Okaasai reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering patriotism and offering competitive salaries to attract and retain the best scientific personnel.
Felicia Dragolici, the IAEA representative outlined key recommendations for Uganda to develop a detailed nuclear power roadmap which include, integrating into international legal frameworks, bolstering human resources, enhancing infrastructure, and public awareness.
