A high-profile struggle over the vast business empire of Ugandan tycoon Mohan Kiwanuka has taken a dramatic turn, leaving his son, lawyer Jordan Sebuliba, facing severe financial hardship and isolation following a major High Court setback.

The protracted legal war hit a turning point when Yudaya Nantege Nsereko, Mohan Kiwanuka’s sister, abruptly returned to the United Kingdom. Before that, Yudaya had spent 20 years in London working in the caregiving sector before returning to Uganda to align with her nephew, Jordan, encouraging his relentless legal fight to secure powers of attorney over his father’s estate.

However, after seven years of bitter courtroom and family battles, things seems to have turned upside down for her and Jordan.

Yudaya and Jordan had hoped that the High Court would rule that, due to tycoon Kiwanuka’s health condition, he was no longer in a position to effectively manage his vast business empire. However, to their shock, the court ruled that, despite Kiwanuka’s health challenges, the authority to manage the business empire should remain with the trustees, namely his wife, Maria Kiwanuka, and his son, Edin Musisi Kiwanuka, as the family had earlier agreed.

Following the court ruling, which shattered all hopes of her and Jordan taking over control of Kiwanuka’s multi billion empire, Yudaya fled back to the UK, leaving him in Uganda to face the fallout alone.

Financial Collapse and Legal Isolation

Family members reveal that the court’s decision severely impacted Jordan’s standing and financial independence in the following ways:

• Loss of Financial Control

Court caveats and rulings stripped Jordan of his power of attorney in 2014 across major family enterprises, including Radio One, Kaboozi ku Bbiri, Visa Investments, 7Trees, and Uni Group, leaving him financially crippled.

• Eviction and Debt

He was stripped of entitlement to the monthly rental income he previously collected from family properties which he had occupied illegally, a move that has since left him drowning in high-interest loans from local moneylenders. Evicted from both family property and rented premises, he has been forced to relocate to his mother Beatrice Kavuma’s home along Kawalya Kaggwa Close in Kololo.

• Failing Practice

His legal chambers, Aegis Advocates, have since seen a dramatic drop in clientele. This is because potential clients have distanced themselves from his firm due to the unrelenting public spotlight and legal controversies surrounding his family battles.

• Personal Life Strain

As if all the above isn’t enough, adding to his troubles, Jordan’s partner reportedly left him amid the mounting family and financial pressures.

Personal Tragedies and Academic Scrutiny

Beyond his financial woes, Jordan is repeatedly dealing with severe personal challenges. One of his elder children is said to be battling a serious health condition requiring specialised care. He has spent millions of shillings to secure enrollment at an expensive special needs school in Naguru, a burden that has reportedly left him overwhelmed and filled with regret over his past actions against his father.

To make matters worse, the broader Kiwanuka family is now raising questions about his professional and academic credentials. Some family members are wondering why he discouraged them from attending his early-2000s graduation at Warwick University, a move that left them with many unanswered questions.
