Former Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among has spoken publicly for the first time since May, thanking President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for what she described as an act of “mercy” after reports emerged that she had been released from house arrest and would not face criminal charges.

In a post on X, Among expressed gratitude to God and President Museveni, saying she was thankful for the restoration of her freedom.
“I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom. My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for his unmatched parental grace and decision to grant me mercy,” Among said.

The statement was her first public post since May 27 and appeared to confirm reports that restrictions imposed on her had been lifted.

Among also indicated that she would soon return to Parliament.
Her remarks came hours after Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba reportedly announced that President Museveni had forgiven the former Speaker and directed that she be released from house arrest.

Security has since been visibly scaled down at Among’s residence in Nakasero, Kampala. At the height of the restrictions, personnel from the Special Forces Command were prominently deployed around the residence.

However, the deployment appeared to have changed on Wednesday, with no soldiers in army uniforms seen at the main entrance.

Instead, three Counter Terrorism Police officers were stationed at the gate, while two men dressed in civilian clothes were observed near the residence.

Among’s troubles reportedly began after she fell out with President Museveni over the Speakership of Parliament earlier this year.

She was allegedly under pressure to withdraw from the race in favour of the eventual Speaker, Jacob Oboth Oboth, but reportedly resisted.

Security agencies later raided several properties linked to Among, including residences in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda and Bukedea, as part of investigations into allegations of corruption, abuse of office, money laundering and illicit wealth accumulation.Her bank accounts were also reportedly frozen.

While Gen Muhoozi’s announcement suggested that Among would not face prosecution, the exact legal and administrative terms surrounding the reported decision had not immediately been made public.

The former Speaker’s latest statement, however, signals a dramatic development in the months long saga and could pave the way for her return to active political life and Parliament.
