The Tooro Kingdom has officially communicated the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, as tributes continue to pour in following the death of the 34-year-old monarch.

King Oyo died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at about 10pm while undergoing medical treatment in the United States.

In its message to President Museveni, Tooro Kingdom expressed deep sorrow and recognised the President’s longstanding relationship with the late king, dating back to Oyo’s childhood.

The notification was signed by Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who described Museveni as one of the important figures who supported and guided the young monarch throughout his life and reign.

Oyo became Omukama in 1995 at only three years old after the death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.

Because of his age, a group of guardians was appointed to guide him and oversee the kingdom’s affairs.

Among those associated with the guardianship were Museveni, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, Princess Elizabeth Bagaaya and Buganda’s Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

Meanwhile, Buganda Kingdom has joined the nation in mourning the death of King Oyo, with Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga describing him as the “younger brother” of Kabaka Mutebi II.
Mayiga said the relationship between Buganda and Tooro dates back generations, with the two royal institutions maintaining strong family and cultural ties.

He noted that Buganda’s Kabaka was among those entrusted with supporting Oyo when he inherited the throne as a child.

The Katikkiro said Oyo’s death was a significant loss not only to Tooro but also to Uganda, particularly because of the monarch’s efforts to preserve Tooro’s cultural heritage and promote the welfare of his subjects.

He appealed to the people of Tooro to remain peaceful and united during the mourning period.

The kingdom has also called on its subjects to remain calm and prayerful, assuring them that the institution of the Omukama will continue despite the passing of the reigning king.
