Old Mutual Investment Group (OMIG) joined the Makerere Endowment Fund (MakEF) at the 6th edition of the Makerere University Marathon, to mobilize resources for the University’s Disability Support Unit and promote a more inclusive learning environment for students with disabilities.

The charity run, themed “Run the Hills for the Future,” brought together participants from across the country in a shared effort to support an initiative that contributes to community development.

The Makerere University Disability Support Centre (DSC) is a university-based facility dedicated to supporting students with disabilities and promoting an inclusive learning environment at Makerere University. The Centre helps address barriers that may affect students’ access to education and participation in university life, including challenges related to accessibility, learning materials, mobility and assistive support.

The 2026 Makerere Marathon is supporting the Centre by mobilizing resources to strengthen its capacity and equip it to better serve students with disabilities.

For OMIG, this participation reflects the organization’s broader view of what it means to invest in the future. As an investment entity, OMIG helps individuals and institutions build financial security over the long term. Supporting initiatives that expand opportunity and create more inclusive communities represents another dimension of investing in a stronger future.

OMIG identifies community, wellness and long-term wellbeing as key dimensions of OMIG’s involvement in the marathon.

The 2026 Makerere Marathon demonstrated the role that partnerships can play in addressing practical barriers to inclusive education. With resources directed towards the Disability Support Unit, the marathon will help strengthen the support available to students with disabilities and contribute to a university environment where participation in learning is more accessible.
