The Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court has granted bail to four individuals involved in the recent March to Parliament demonstration against corruption among Members of Parliament and other government officials in Uganda.

The protesters, identified as Faiza Salima, Dr. Thomas Kanzira, Bernard Ewalu Olupot, and Hamala Edgar Barlow, were granted bail set at Ugx 200,000 in cash, with non-cash sureties required to provide Ugx 500,000.

However, another accused, identified as Elidad Musinguzi, was denied bail until August 14, 2024, as his sureties did not meet the court’s requirements.

The bail application hearing was presided over by HW Doreen Erimu at Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court.

The accused were arrested on July 23, 2024, during a demonstration where protesters attempted to march to Parliament.

According to the police report, from July 22–25, 2024, over 100 individuals were arrested in connection with the said protests, with 75 suspects apprehended on July 23 alone.

Preliminary reports indicate that among those arrested, 74 were brought before the court, while one remained in police custody.

According to the charge sheet, the demonstrators were charged with common nuisance, as they allegedly obstructed public order while carrying placards.

The protests were part of a broader movement against corruption, particularly targeting Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, who has faced accusations of corruption practices.

The bail application hearing was attended by several supporters of the protesters,including the former Rubaga Division Deputy RCC, Herbert Anderson Burora; NUP party Secretary General, David Rubongoya; accused’s family and friends.
