The Government has pledged a seamless transition of electricity distribution operations from Umeme Limited to Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL). This development follows Umeme’s failure to renew its operating license after over a decade of managing Uganda’s power distribution network.

Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa emphasized the Government’s commitment to retaining the over 2,000 employees currently employed by Umeme, ensuring job security for the workforce during this significant shift. “No jobs will be lost in this transition,” Nankabirwa stated, addressing fears among Umeme staff. She also highlighted the importance of maintaining consistent and reliable power supply throughout the handover process.

UEDCL’s leadership echoed the Minister’s assurances, confirming that the transition plan prioritizes both employee welfare and the continuity of electricity distribution services nationwide. The company has already initiated measures to integrate Umeme’s workforce into its operations smoothly.

This transition marks a new chapter in Uganda’s energy sector, as the Government seeks to strengthen its role in power distribution. Stakeholders have welcomed the move but called for transparent processes to uphold efficiency and service quality.

The Government is optimistic that the change will lead to more effective management of electricity distribution, benefiting both consumers and the national economy.
