Covid-19: Democratic Party Donates Relief Food To National Task Force

Democratic Party President General Hon. Nobert Mao and his Vice President Hon. Fred Dennis Mukasa Mbidde have today delivered 5 tonnes of Maize flour to the National Covid-19 Task force.

DP National Leaders were received by the Prime Minister Dr. Livingstone Ruhakana Rugunda at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala on Thursday. The Party President and his Deputy Mbidde were accompanied by the Ag. Secretary General Gerald Siranda, The National Party Chairman Dr. Kiwanuka Mayambala and other party stalwarts.

While handing over the donation to the Prime Minister on behalf of the Party, President Mao said, “It’s over 6 weeks now since the government of Uganda declared the coronavirus pandemic a national disaster announced a package of extraordinary measures to combat this grave public health emergency.”

“The response of Ugandans to this crisis has been remarkable. Millions of Ugandans understood the gravity of the situation. Most Ugandans have accepted the restrictions that have been placed on their lives and have taken responsibility for changing their behavior.”

“The Democratic Party is heartened that every sector of society has been mobilized and has accepted the role that it need to play. From religious leaders to traditional leaders, from political parties to CSO, from trade union to NGO, from business community to corporate organization, every part of our society has come forward to confront this challenge.”

“Many have had to make different choices and sacrifices but all have been determined that these choices and sacrifices are absolutely necessary if our country is to emerge stronger from disaster. Over the past weeks, Ugandans have demonstrated their determination, their sense of purpose, their sense of community, and their sense of responsibility.”

“The Democratic Party would like to thank the health workers, our doctors, nurses, and paramedics who are on frontline of this pandemic, our teachers, border officials, police and traffic officers, the Army, LDU and all other people who have been leading our response.”

“Our country finds itself confronted not only by a virus that has infected some people, but also by the hunger stricken and a prospect of deep economic recession that will cause business to close and many people to loose their jobs and others nearly starve to death.”

“Therefore, as we marshal our every resources and our every energy to fight this pandemic, working together with our members, the Democratic Party is putting in place measures to respond to the communities in dire need of food relief.”

“The Democratic Party is donating 5 tonnes of corn flour to the Uganda National Task Force and further measures are under consideration and will be communicated to all Ugandans,” said President Mao in his detailed statement.

The Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda thanked the Democratic Party for the donation and underscored the need for a united front against the pandemic. He said that all parties were represented on the Covid-19 National Task force and anyone with ideas to help fight the Pandemic can channel them through those representatives.

Meanwhile, the Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has also donated bags of Rice to the National Covid-19 Task Force and he was also received by the Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda.

In Masaka, the District woman MP Hon. Babirye Kabanda has also donated 5 tonnes of Maize flour to the District Covid-19 task force through her NGO known as Babirye Kabanda Development Foundation. she handed over the relief food to the Resident District Commissioner Mr. Herman Ssentongo in Masaka town on Thursday.

MP Babirye Kabanda joins the East Africa Legislative Assembly MP, Hon Denis Mukasa Mbidde who donated a Lorry of Matooke and two tonnes of Maize flour on Saturday last week, the business community in Masaka led by the Chairman China- Africa Friendship Association Uganda Chapter, Eng Benon Mugarura donated Shs 54.5m which was converted into food for relief, Masaka Disabled People Living with HIV/Aids, Sand Beach Nabugabo among other people and organizations that contributed to cause.
