Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere has called on authorities to ensure a level playing field in elections, emphasizing that a flawed electoral process undermines democracy. He stressed that it would be better to forego elections altogether than to conduct them under a cloud of intimidation and brutality.

His appeal follows violent incidents that marred the nomination process for the Kawempe North parliamentary by-election on February 26, 2025. Security personnel from the Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force (JATT) reportedly assaulted and arrested National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, only to release him later without charge. Additionally, a journalist from Top TV, Miracle Ibra, suffered serious injuries after being struck with an object during the fracas. He is currently receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital for an eye injury.

While leading mass at Our Lady of Fatima Queen of Peace Cathedral in Luwero Town, commemorating 28 years of Kasana Luwero Diocese, Archbishop Ssemogerere condemned the violence. He urged both security forces and political actors to ensure a peaceful electoral process, reminding law enforcement agencies to adhere to President Yoweri Museveni’s directive against torturing citizens.

Local leaders echoed his sentiments, with Luwero Town Council LC3 Chairperson Chris Johns Buwembo commending the Archbishop for speaking out and expressing hope that his message would help curb further unrest. Meanwhile, Central Youth MP Agnes Kirabo encouraged young voters in Kawempe to go and vote candidate of their choice.
