Kampala Metropolitan police have launched investigations following a foiled armed robbery at the DTB Bank branch in Kkona East village, Wakiso Town Council.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday at around 1:30 AM. Responding swiftly to a distress call, officers found the suspected robbers hiding in the bank’s ceiling. Upon ordering the suspects to surrender, police deployed tear gas to flush them out. However, the suspects responded by cocking their weapons, prompting a swift and decisive response from the officers.

During the confrontation, one suspect was fatally shot, while the other surrendered and was taken into custody.

The arrested suspect, identified as Okello Justine, 27, disclosed during interrogation that he and the deceased, Okao Emmanuel, also 27, were both private security guards working for G.K.O Security Limited. The duo had been assigned to the bank’s night shift and allegedly conspired to rob the very institution they were meant to protect. They had reportedly removed their uniforms to disguise their identities and facilitate an easier escape.

Police have registered a case of Attempted Aggravated Robbery and continue to investigate the matter. The body of the deceased has been transferred to the City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

SSP Onyango praised the officers for their quick response, noting that the incident highlights the critical role of vigilance and rapid action in thwarting criminal activities.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
