Uganda Police is on a hunt for a yet to be known gun thugs for shooting and robing a mobile money agent in Matugga Trading Center, Wakiso District.

Shafiq Matovu is nursing gunshot wounds at Mulago National Referral Hospital after being shot by thugs.

Matovu was attacked by armed thugs riding on a motorcycle around 10pm on Friday night as he was returning home with a bag of money.

The thugs shot at Matovu three times and managed to hit him on the left thigh and arm.

According to Matovu on his hospital bed at Mulago hospital, robbers trailed him from his workplace in the trading center and wanted to rob him at a dark spot where CCTV cameras don’t cover.

He added that after hearing the gunshots, he jumped off the Boda-boda that was riding him but in the process of saving his life, the thugs shot him on the thigh to disable him.

He however, said that he managed to escape and entered the nearby Pump Fuel station shouting for help.

Matovu’s brother, Tony Ssekabila, told this website that he received a phone call from someone notifying him that his brother had been shot.

He wants security in the area tightened despite the installation of CCTV cameras.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire said the suspects were unable to rob the money, but left their victim in critical condition.

“He was shot three times. But when they failed to rob the money, they took off. A hunt is still on,” Assistant Superintendent of Police Owoyesigyire said.
Police officers are previewing the CCTV footage to identify the attackers.
At least 10 people have been shot dead in armed robberies in the country in the last few months.

Owoyesigire added that police with the help of sister security Agencies have started investigations and hunt for the attackers.

Attacks on mobile money agents are on the rise with more than 37 cases reported around the country since January.

At least 7 people have been shot dead and a dozen others injured in attacks on mobile money agents around Kampala Metropolitan this year.
