In a brazen attack in the early hours of Thursday morning, armed men ambushed a trailer en route from Goma to the Bunagana border, just 20 kilometers shy of its destination. The truck, carrying two Congolese nationals, was halted at a makeshift roadblock around 3:00 AM.

According to Mr. Muhindo Bashir, one of the occupants, approximately ten gunmen surrounded the vehicle. The truck, which transports merchandise to Congo and returns loaded with timber, also had five gold bars totaling five kilograms hidden in various sections. The attackers conducted a thorough search and eventually uncovered the concealed gold.

The assailants also carried out body searches on Mr. Bashir and the driver, Mr. Baluku Moses, seizing a total of $2,000 in cash from the two men.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. Local security forces have been alerted, and an investigation is reportedly underway to track down the perpetrators and recover the stolen goods.

This attack highlights the ongoing security concerns along the Goma–Bunagana route, a critical commercial corridor often targeted by armed groups. Travelers and traders are urged to exercise caution, particularly during nighttime hours.
