Arsenal have confirmed they will end their sleeve sponsorship agreement with the Rwanda Development Board, bringing an eight-year partnership to a close when the deal expires in June 2026. The “Visit Rwanda” logo will remain on the club’s shirts for the rest of the current campaign, but the Premier League side have decided to move in a new direction from the 2026-27 season.
The decision follows growing concern among supporters and human rights groups over Rwanda’s political record. The Rwandan government has faced longstanding allegations of repression, including the targeting of political opposition figures and reported involvement in supporting the M23 militia in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These concerns intensified after the UK Supreme Court ruled the British government’s proposal to send asylum seekers to Rwanda unlawful, and after the UK suspended aid to Rwanda in early 2025.
A recent survey by the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust reflected the public mood: more than 90 per cent of respondents favoured ending the partnership, with two-thirds wanting an immediate withdrawal. However, cancelling the agreement early was considered financially risky and legally complex, making a clean departure at the contract’s end more practical.
Despite the controversy, Arsenal’s relationship with the Rwanda Development Board had been commercially successful. The sponsorship provided significant revenue that supported the club’s sporting ambitions, and Rwanda had hoped to extend the deal. Talks continued for nearly a year, with the East African nation keen to maintain a long-term presence on Arsenal’s kits.
However, club executives felt compelled to explore alternative sponsors amid reputational concerns and the potential threat of international sanctions affecting the arrangement. With the production schedule for future Adidas kits tightening, Arsenal needed clarity on their sleeve sponsor by the end of the year.
Chief commercial officer Juliet Slot ultimately presented an offer viewed as more favourable overall, contributing to the board’s decision to pursue a new partner. Interest from companies in technology and cryptocurrency sectors has been reported, with an announcement expected soon.
While the partnership between Arsenal and Visit Rwanda will conclude, Rwanda is expected to continue collaborating with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment through existing ties with the LA Rams and SoFi Stadium.
