In a decisive push to address youth unemployment and bridge the regional skills gap, BrighterMonday Uganda, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, successfully hosted its inaugural Gulu Career Fair. Held under the theme Matching Ambition with Opportunity, the landmark event gathered more than 1,000 ambitious participants and 59 employers, transforming the venue into a high-energy hub for recruitment, networking, and professional transformation.

Navigating a Shifting Job Market

The fair arrived at a critical juncture for the Ugandan labor market, which is currently undergoing a rapid shift toward a skills-first economy. Market insights shared during the event highlighted that while Northern Uganda possesses a burgeoning talent pool, there remains a significant information gap between regional job seekers and the evolving needs of modern employers. Data suggests that nearly 65% of employers now prioritize soft skills, such as emotional intelligence and adaptability—over traditional credentials alone. By bringing this inaugural event to Gulu, BrighterMonday is actively decentralizing access to the job market, ensuring that geography is no longer a barrier to professional success.

Guidance from Leadership and Visionaries

Ojok Walter, Founder of House of Ojok

The event was graced by local government and academic leadership, including the Dean of Students and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, who recognized the fair as an essential bridge between classroom theory and real-world employment. During the opening remarks, the LC3 Vice Chairperson, Atim Vickie, encouraged the youth to take skilling seriously, noting that practical expertise is the most reliable currency in today’s competitive landscape. This sentiment was echoed by keynote speaker Ojok Walter, who provided a roadmap for professional success by encouraging the youth to start right where they are with the tools at their disposal. He reminded the audience that success is a matter of preparation meeting luck, advising them to “position themselves to be struck by the lightning of opportunities.”

Immediate Impact through Real-Time Matching

Breaking away from traditional networking-only formats, the Gulu Career Fair featured real-time job matching that delivered immediate impact. Employers did not simply collect CVs; they conducted live interview sessions directly in the room. This high-intensity approach resulted in several participants securing job offers on the spot, bypassing the often-lengthy digital application cycle and providing tangible results for Gulu’s most prepared candidates. This face-to-face interaction allowed employers to assess the drive and personality of candidates in a way that paper applications often fail to capture.

Innovating with the AI Career Assistant

To further modernize the job search process, the event featured a specialized AI Career Demo, introducing participants to the AI Career Assistant. This tool acts as a dedicated digital partner to help youth navigate the workplace by optimizing CVs for modern tracking systems and providing real-time guidance on professional development, including mock interviews and salary negotiation. By integrating technology into the career journey, BrighterMonday is empowering job seekers to use artificial intelligence as a co-pilot in their search for fulfilling roles, making the process of finding work more efficient and data-driven.

The Gen-Kazi Vision for Dignified Work

At the heart of this initiative is the Gen-Kazi (Generation Kazi) Programme, a joint venture between BrighterMonday Uganda and the Mastercard Foundation. The programme is specifically designed to help young people find dignified and fulfilling work by focusing on the pillars of skilling and intentional career preparation. Through Gen-Kazi, BrighterMonday is moving beyond traditional job listings to act as a long-term career partner. By equipping the youth of Gulu with the “Power Skills” that modern employers demand, the programme ensures that the next generation of workers is not just searching for jobs, but is actively matching their unique ambitions with sustainable, long-term opportunities.
