The Executive Director of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, has been awarded the Rotary Award by the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda in recognition of his outstanding leadership and commitment to national service through high-quality statistical work and professional excellence.

The Chief Guest, Hon. Mike Sebalu, who is also the District Governor for D9213 and a member of the Rotary Club of Bukoto, commended Dr. Mukiza in his remarks, praising him for demonstrating exemplary vocational service in line with Rotary’s core values of integrity, service above self, and creating lasting community impact.

He emphasized the critical role of statistics in national development, noting that accurate and timely data is essential for policy formulation, planning, budgeting, monitoring, and effective service delivery.

“Statistics are not just numbers; they are the backbone of decision-making,” Hon. Sebalu said, highlighting that institutions such as UBOS are central to guiding the country toward measurable progress.

He further acknowledged Dr. Mukiza’s leadership as instrumental in strengthening Uganda’s statistical systems and ensuring that national planning is anchored in credible and reliable evidence.

Hon. Sebalu also explained the selection process for the award, noting that nominations are made by members, reviewed by a board, and finally presented to the general assembly for approval.

He added that Dr. Mukiza has consistently produced high-quality statistical outputs from the national level down to the lowest administrative units, making him a worthy recipient of the honour. He also noted that Dr. Mukiza is a member of the Rotary Club of Muyenga and a Major Donor.

In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Chris Mukiza expressed gratitude to the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda for the recognition, describing the award as encouragement to further strengthen Uganda’s statistical capacity and ensure UBOS continues to provide reliable and relevant data for national development.

“I am truly grateful to the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda for recognizing my service with the Rotary Award,” Dr. Mukiza said. “This honour reflects not only my personal efforts but also the dedication of the entire institution and our commitment to excellence.”

He noted that Rotarians use statistical data to complement government efforts in communities, citing examples such as the blood bank at Mengo Hospital and the cancer unit at Nsambya Hospital, both aimed at improving public welfare.

He further stressed that UBOS has continuously strengthened Uganda’s statistical systems to ensure the availability of reliable data for planning and development.

He encouraged UBOS staff to join Rotary clubs of their choice to broaden their service and professional networks, noting the shared values between Rotary and statistical service delivery.

The President of the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda, Ann Kamugisa, commended Dr. Mukiza for his leadership, saying it has strengthened institutional credibility and significantly contributed to Uganda’s development agenda.

She noted that under his leadership, UBOS has become a key pillar in national planning, supporting government institutions, the private sector, and development partners.

She added that the Rotary Award is a reflection of the club’s appreciation of his outstanding contribution and the positive impact he has made on the lives of many Ugandans.

The award ceremony was held at Statistics House in Kampala and was attended by Rotarians from various clubs within the Kampala Metropolitan Area.
