The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has marked 39 years since it took over power with a grand celebration held today in Mubende District.

The event was graced by President Yoweri Museveni, who took the occasion to honor individuals for their outstanding contributions to Uganda’s development.

Among the honorees was Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, a renowned businessman, investor, and philanthropist, who received the Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane (Grand Officer). The award recognizes his exceptional service to Uganda in the public and private sectors.

Dr. Ruparelia, born in Kampala on January 17, 1956, returned to Uganda in 1985 after a stint in the United Kingdom as a refugee. With only $25,000 in savings, he established the Ruparelia Group, which has since grown into a multi-sector conglomerate with investments in real estate, financial services, education, hospitality, and agriculture. Today, the group employs over 8,000 people and stands as one of Uganda’s largest taxpayers.

During his speech, President Museveni lauded Dr. Ruparelia’s entrepreneurial spirit and significant role in Uganda’s economic development. The President also highlighted Ruparelia’s philanthropic contributions through the Ruparelia Foundation, which has donated over $1 million to charitable causes, including healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation.

Sheena Ruparelia

Adding to the day’s celebrations, Sudhir’s daughter, Sheena Ruparelia, was also recognized with a medal for her contributions. Sheena, an accomplished businesswoman, has followed in her father’s footsteps, playing an active role in the management and expansion of the Ruparelia Group.

The event featured cultural performances, speeches, and a reflection on the achievements of the NRM government over the past 39 years. The President reiterated the party’s commitment to fostering stability and development in Uganda, encouraging citizens to continue supporting the NRM’s vision for progress.

As the Ruparelia family celebrated their honors, Dr. Sudhir emphasized the importance of giving back to the community and thanked the President for recognizing his family’s efforts. “This award is not just for me but for all Ugandans who strive to build our nation,” he said.

The celebrations concluded with a showcase of achievements under the NRM government, as well as plans for the future, signaling continued focus on economic growth, education, and healthcare.
