Govt Warns Private Schools on Early Re-opening, Extortion

State Minister for Higher Education Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo has cautioned schools against opening the school term before the official date.

According to the official school calendar from the Ministry of Education and Sports, the school term will commence on 5th February.

Muyingo says that he has already received reports that many schools are preparing to start teaching before that date, which he said is illegal.

Muyingo asked the District Education Officers to clamp down on schools that disregard the directive.

He was speaking at a Thanksgiving ceremony at the home of Varelia Nakiwala at Busiika in Ziroobwe Town Council.

Muyingo noted that some schools are asking learners to report back not because they want to teach, but are looking for money.

He argued that holidays are a period for the children to be nurtured by parents without being burdened by studies.

Muyingo noted that a home is the best school to shape a child. That is why he and other successful people are in leadership positions because they used to spend time with their parents during the holidays.
