As part of the ongoing investigation, police have arrested Adu Deborah, suspected of setting fire to the house of UPDF officer Martin Ikwaru 28, which resulted in the death of his one-year-old son.

It is alleged that the 25-year-old Deborah is the ex-wife of the UPDF officer.

The fire broke out in Nabweru on August 1, 2024, while Ikwaru and his wife had stepped out of the house to take a shower. Upon noticing flames emanating from their home, they ran back inside and found the bedroom ablaze. Ikwaru managed to rescue his children but unfortunately lost his one-year-old son, Emmanuel Onam.

ASP Luke Owoyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, said a rescue team from police arrived at the scene and put down the fire.

“The territorial police in Kawempe, along with experts from the fire prevention and rescue services, responded promptly and successfully extinguished the fire,” Owoyesigire stated.

He added that a forensics team was sent to the crime scene and recovered items, including a matchbox and a small plastic container suspected to contain kerosene, which have been submitted for forensic analysis.

The other children sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Kirudu (Nexus)
