The Minister of Internal Affairs, Kahinda Otafiire, has asked the Office of the President to train Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) officers in basic criminal law.

He made these statements at the annual coordination meeting between the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and CID on August 5, 2024, at the CID headquarters in Kibuli.

According to Otafiire, there is a need for CID officers to be educated in various disciplines in order to clearly comprehend the law, understand crime waves, and effectively curb criminals.

“The criminals may have reduced, but they have become more sophisticated. We need CID officers who are conversant with cyber-crime and competent with maritime law, among others,” he said.

Similarly, Otafiire also asked President Museveni to upgrade the working conditions of security organs and pledged his commitment together with the IGP to reconstitute the matter.

He asked that the government, through the Minister of Finance, Matia Kasaija, address the problem of welfare.

“Kasaija should know that there is need for adequate welfare. I bleed when I see officers working at Jinja Road sleeping in Mukono, and they must come to work in the morning on time on their meager salaries. There is a need for housing the police, prisons, and the directorate of immigration,” Otafiire noted.

The meeting ran under the theme, “The contribution of ODPP/CID in the socio-economic transformation of Uganda.”(nexus media).
