Masaka city has faced a battleground within the National Unity Platform (NUP), with clashes between Mayor Florence Namayanja and Nyendo Mukungwe MP who doubles as Opposition Leader in parliament Mathias Mpuuga.

This confrontation between the duo has manifested itself as a proxy war, with each side enlisting the support of lower-level leaders to champion their cause.

Notable figures in Mpuuga’s corner include Kimaanya Kabonera MP Dr. Abed Bwanika, Masaka City Woman MP Juliet Kakande, Nyendo-Mukungwe City Division Mayor Mulindwa Micheal Nakumusana, and Lukyamuzi Stephen, the Chairperson of Kimaanya Kabonera Division. Dr. Abed Bwanika has been alleging that Mayor Namayanja is complicit in the unauthorised sale of numerous city properties, including valuable land and buildings that are the rightful assets of Masaka City.
