M7 Appoints Justice Abodo New DPP

President Yoweri Kaguta  Museveni has appointed Justice Jane Frances Abodo as the new Director of Public Prosecutions.

Abodo was attached to the Criminal Division of the High Court by the time of her appointment.
The new appointment comes after former DPP Justice Mike J. Chibita on January 27, 2020 handed over the office to Mr. Charles Elem, the deputy director of Public Prosecutions to charge in acting capacity.

Justice Chibita, became the Director of Public Prosecutions in 2013, was recently appointed Justice of the Supreme Court which created a vacuum in DPP’s Office.
Justice Abodo comes in to head DPP’s office when Uganda is currently facing a lot criminal cases backlog.
Ugandans especially in legal fraternity are hopeful that Justice Abodo is going to make various reforms that are aimed at reduction of case backlog strategies, implementation of plea bargaining system in collaboration with courts.
When we talked to Ms Jacquelyn Okui, the Acting Public Relations Officer for DPP, she confirmed to have received the news of Justice Abodo’s appointment from the fountain of honour Yoweri Museveni.
Mr. Elem-Ogwal will go back to his position the deputy DPP when Justice Abodo officially takes over office.
