The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has officially appointed Maj. Bilal Katamba as the Acting Deputy Defence Public Information Officer. His appointment, effective immediately, was confirmed on March 3, 2025.

Maj. Katamba steps into this significant role, replacing Col. Deo Asiimwe Akiiki, who has transitioned to serve as the Military Assistant to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. His new position places him at the heart of the UPDF’s communication and public relations efforts, ensuring that defence-related information is effectively managed and disseminated.

Prior to this appointment, Maj. Katamba served as the Public Information Officer for the UPDF’s Mountain Division, a role in which he demonstrated strong leadership and media engagement skills. His experience in handling military communications, particularly in operational areas, has equipped him with the expertise necessary for his new position.

As the Acting Deputy Defence Public Information Officer, Maj. Katamba will be responsible for enhancing the UPDF’s public communication strategy, coordinating media relations, and ensuring transparency in defence affairs. His role is crucial in shaping the public perception of the UPDF and maintaining a strong relationship between the military and the citizens of Uganda.

The appointment reflects the UPDF’s commitment to strengthening its communication structures by placing experienced personnel in key positions. Maj. Katamba’s background in military public relations is expected to bring continuity and effectiveness to the department.

His leadership in this role will be instrumental in keeping the public informed about defence matters, reinforcing the UPDF’s commitment to professionalism, and ensuring that accurate information is shared with stakeholders.
