Justice Minister Norbert Mao has called for urgent electoral reforms in the wake of the chaos that marred the Kawempe North by-election. He described the events as a setback for democracy, highlighting weaknesses in the Electoral Commission, unresolved political tensions, and the presence of unofficial security forces as key factors undermining a fair process.

The election saw Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola clinch victory with 17,764 votes, more than doubling the 8,593 votes secured by his closest rival, Faridah Nambi of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). Despite the presence of eight other contenders, they failed to make a significant impact on the race.

Violence and irregularities characterized the election day, with reports of security forces clamping down on voters, opposition figures, and journalists.

The NRM contesting the results and vowing legal action, the aftermath of the election has only intensified calls for reforms to ensure future polls are conducted transparently and without violence.
