The sparkling new Kid on the block Isaac Rukanda Akampurira has officially been nominated by National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi as a candidate for the influential position of NRM Vice Chairman for Western Uganda.
His nomination has sent shockwaves through the political establishment and ignited an unprecedented wave of youth support across the country.
Speaking shortly after returning a nomination form at the NRM Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala on Thursday, Isaac described his candidacy as “a bold step toward reviving internal democracy, promoting grassroots participation, and empowering the party’s dedicated mobilizers.
“This step is not just about politics,” Isaac declared. “It’s about continuing the struggle I have passionately led for years advocating for internal democracy, active grassroots participation, and ensuring our mobilizers are not left behind. The time has come for fresh, committed leadership that reflects the voice and aspirations of our generation.”
Isaac’s message of reform and inclusivity has rapidly gained traction, particularly among Uganda’s youth, who view him as a symbol of change within the ruling party. His entry into the race is widely seen as a challenge to entrenched political figures, with insiders noting growing unease among longtime party heavyweights.
Well known for his outspoken stance on internal party reform, Isaac first drew national attention in November 2024 when he publicly called on the NRM leadership to resume internal elections a process that had been dormant since 2016, in violation of the party’s own constitution. His call for transparency was lauded by both party loyalists and political analysts.
In a landmark gesture of unity, Isaac also wrote to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni urging against the expulsion of members who chose to run as independents, instead advocating for dialogue and inclusiveness within party ranks.
Champion of Youth and Social Causes
Outside the political arena, Isaac Rukanda has made a name for himself as a passionate advocate for youth empowerment and social reform. He has spearheaded several initiatives aimed at tackling drug abuse, HIV/AIDS awareness, alcoholism, and teenage pregnancies. His community programs focus on poverty eradication and equipping young Ugandans with practical skills for economic self-reliance.
His hands-on approach and consistent presence at grassroots level have earned him admiration far beyond political circles. Supporters say Isaac’s blend of activism and integrity makes him uniquely positioned to steer the party toward a more transparent and participatory future.
As the NRM prepares for its hotly contested internal elections later this year, Isaac Rukanda Akampurira’s candidacy is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched in the country. His campaign embodies a generational shift, offering a compelling alternative to the status quo and signaling a renewed energy within Uganda’s dominant political force.
If elected, Isaac promises to be a vice chairman who listens, consults, and works hand-in-hand with the people especially the youth to deliver a party that is not only strong at the top but also vibrant at the grassroots.
The political spotlight now turns to the Western region, where the question remains: Can this young reformist ride the groundswell of popular support to victory and help chart a new course for the future of the NRM?
