In a bold move to bolster the leadership of Uganda’s police force, President Yoweri Museveni, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has elevated five senior officers to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP). This latest round of promotions marks a significant reshuffle aimed at injecting fresh energy and strategic vision into the Uganda Police Force’s top hierarchy.

The newly appointed AIGPs, who now hold the third-highest rank in the force, are poised to take on key leadership roles:

AIGP Steven Tanui – Newly named Director of Fire and Rescue Services, tasked with enhancing disaster response and emergency management.

AIGP Appola James – Appointed as Director of Logistics and Engineering, a critical role ensuring efficiency in police operations and resource management.

AIGP Nuwabine Lawrence – Promoted to Director of Traffic and Road Safety, taking the reins in curbing Uganda’s traffic chaos and improving road safety measures.

AIGP Obwona Joseph – Assigned as Director of INTERPOL, representing Uganda on international policing matters and enhancing cross-border crime prevention.

AIGP Musana John – Now Deputy Director of Welfare, focused on improving the well-being and morale of officers.

These officers, formerly Senior Commissioners of Police, have demonstrated exceptional dedication and leadership, earning the trust of the Commander-in-Chief. Their promotions come at a time when the police force is under pressure to address a variety of challenges, from traffic management to transnational crime.

The Uganda Police Force’s spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, praised the promotions as a strategic move to strengthen the institution’s capacity to serve the public effectively. “These appointments are a testament to the professionalism and dedication of our officers. We are confident that they will excel in their new roles and drive the force to greater heights,” Rusoke stated.

The new appointments take effect immediately, signaling a clear commitment to reform and excellence. This reshuffle not only acknowledges the contributions of the five officers but also sends a strong message about the government’s focus on law enforcement efficiency and modernization.

As the nation watches closely, the expectations are high for these leaders to implement transformative changes in their respective roles, ensuring a safer, more organized Uganda. Only time will tell how these new AIGPs will rise to the challenge of shaping the future of the Uganda Police Force.
