A cloud of mystery surrounds the tragic death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, who played for Vipers Sports Club, after he allegedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kajjansi earlier today.

According to police reports, Lawal arrived at the shopping mall in his Toyota Mark X (registration number UBQ 695G) to visit his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national. Naima, who has been residing in room 416 of the mall since February 20, 2025, informed authorities that she left Lawal in her room preparing tea while she briefly stepped out to a nearby game center. Shortly after, at approximately 8:00 AM, Lawal reportedly plunged from the balcony.

Bystanders rushed to his aid, and he was quickly taken to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death. The news of his passing has sent shockwaves through the football community, with fans and teammates expressing disbelief and sorrow.

The police have launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Detectives have recovered Lawal’s belongings, including two smartphones, a pair of open shoes, headsets, a training kit, and chargers, from his black backpack. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage and conducting detailed interrogations to determine whether foul play was involved or if it was a tragic accident.

Speaking on the matter, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer ASP Luke Owoyesigyire stated:

“We are actively investigating the incident to establish what exactly transpired. We urge the public to remain patient as we gather more details. Further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.”

Lawal, known for his exceptional skills on the pitch, joined Vipers SC in 2023 and had become a key player for the club. His sudden death has left many unanswered questions, and fans are demanding clarity on the circumstances leading up to the tragedy.

As investigations continue, tributes have started pouring in from fellow footballers, clubs, and supporters, all mourning the loss of a talented athlete whose career was cut short under mysterious circumstances.
