The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) has taken a significant step in boosting livestock development with the official handover of sites for the construction of the Teso Animal Breeding Demonstration Centre (TABDEC).

The ceremony was presided over by the NAGRC&DB Board Chairperson, Mr. Ben Anyama, who emphasized that the project will bring modern livestock services closer to farmers and strengthen breeding systems across the region.

TABDEC will be developed across two locations of Aoroko and Amujeju covering a combined area of over 300 acres. The expansive facility is set to become a central hub for livestock innovation, training, and production.

The centre will feature modern infrastructure, including administrative offices, staff accommodation, training facilities, and specialized units for poultry, piggery, and fish farming.

It will also include artificial insemination (AI) training hostels, hatcheries, feed production units, cattle sheds, hay storage facilities, and water resources such as valley tanks and fish ponds.

According to officials, the project reflects the government’s commitment to improving livestock productivity by providing farmers with access to superior animal genetics and practical farming knowledge. It is expected to play a key role in enhancing herd quality and increasing incomes for households in Bukedea and the greater Teso region.

In addition to its long-term benefits, the construction phase is anticipated to create job opportunities for local communities through the use of local labour and services.

Once completed, TABDEC will serve as a vital centre for livestock breeding, training, and demonstration, positioning it as a key driver in transforming Uganda’s livestock sector.
