The National Ruling Movement – NRM Candidate Andrew Muwonge has emerged the winner of the Kayunga LC5 Seat following Thursday’s polls in the district.

According to latest polls announced on Friday morning, Andrew Muwonge garnered a total of 31,830 votes against National Unity Platform’s Harriet Nakwedde who managed 31,380 votes in a highly contested election.

The NRM win which faces much protestation from the opposition NUP sees the ruling party reclaim the seat from opposition after barely a year since the late Ffeffeka Muhammad Sserubogo captured the powers.

The seat would later fall vacant after Ffeffeka the then LC5 Chairperson was discovered dead behind his house in Kyebanja village, Kayunga subcounty in a suspected suicide.

Shortly after the declaration, NUP’s Betty Namboze rubished the government for stepping on the rights of Ugandans and declaring whom she termed a loser Muwonge.

The declaration of results comes amid allegations of ballot stuffing, intimidation of voters, and arrests of polling agents.

The race to fill the vacant LC5 chairperson seat attracted six candidates including National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Harriet Nakwedde who is running a tight race with National Resistance Movement’s Andrew Muwonge. Others were DP’s Anthony Waddimba and independent candidates Majid Nyanzi, Jamir Kamoga, and Boniface Bandikubi.
