Busiro East MP Hon. Medard Lubega Sseggona has announced plans to consult his constituents following the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) decision to hand the party’s parliamentary flag for the 2026 elections to singer Matthias Walukaga.
Speaking after the announcement, Sseggona said he respected the party’s decision but would return to the people of Busiro for guidance on his next political move. “Now that the party has made its decision, I am going to consult with the people of Busiro. The people of Busiro first saw me in 2010. It’s likely that I was the one who introduced NUP to them,” he stated.
Sseggona questioned the process used to gauge support on the ground, calling for transparency. “When you say you asked people on the ground, you need to have evidence. Who did you ask? Is he or she a party member? Where does this person live?” he asked.
He emphasized his long-standing contribution to both the party and his constituency. “I have no personal project in the Parliament of Uganda. I am always deployed by various stakeholders, the party and the people of Busiro,” he said. Sseggona also revealed that he played a key role in drafting NUP’s constitution, including the section on flag bearer selection, though he noted that these procedures have not been fully implemented.
“When I spoke about my credentials, the media portrayed me as if I were bragging, but those are simply my credentials,” he added, noting that he had anticipated the outcome. “I saw the signs, so I wasn’t surprised by my party’s decision. Even before the Mpuuga scenario, there were rumors that they wanted to oust us.”
Sseggona is expected to begin consultations with his constituents in the coming weeks.
