NUP’s Muyizzi To Battle Against Mpuuga In Nyendo-Mukungwe Race

The political landscape in Nyendo-Mukungwe is heating up as National Unity Platform (NUP) lawyer, Samuel Muyizzi, prepares to challenge incumbent MP Mathias Mpuuga for the parliamentary seat. Muyizzi, a seasoned legal practitioner and political figure, has declared his readiness to unseat Mpuuga, who has served in Parliament for 15 years.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Muyizzi dismissed claims that he lacks the political experience needed for the race, pointing to his extensive leadership background. His political journey dates back to his time at Makerere University, where he held various student leadership roles, including serving as Minister for Culture and Entertainment and Chairperson of Nkrumah Hall. Beyond university politics, he has also been a key figure in Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), holding positions such as Secretary General and National Legal Advisor for the Democratic Party (DP).

Nyendo-Mukungwe constituency was formed when Masaka attained city status, and in the 2021 elections, Mpuuga won the seat on the NUP ticket. A former DP stalwart, Mpuuga joined the People Power movement, which later evolved into NUP under Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine. Following his victory, he was appointed Leader of the Opposition in Parliament (LOP), a position that placed him at the forefront of NUP’s political strategy.

However, Mpuuga’s standing within NUP has since been shaken by controversy. His acceptance of a UGX 500 million ‘service award’ while serving as LOP triggered a fallout with party leadership. When asked to apologize, he refused, deepening the rift. This standoff culminated in Mpuuga’s exit from NUP, leading him to form the Democratic Alliance (DA) alongside figures like former MP Mike Mabikke and ex-presidential candidate Samuel Walter Lubega Mukaaku.

While speculation suggests that Mpuuga might contest for the presidency in 2026, Muyizzi insists that his true intention is to seek re-election in Nyendo-Mukungwe. “He is simply creating a diversion, but my sources confirm that he is preparing to return as MP,” Muyizzi asserted.

Muyizzi, known for his legal battles in defense of high-profile opposition figures, believes his reputation as a lawyer for the oppressed gives him an edge in the race. His legal work has included representing Bobi Wine, Dr. Kizza Besigye, former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, and several opposition MPs facing politically motivated charges. Additionally, he played a key role in the legal defense of Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere, following the 2016 Rwenzururu Palace attack.

With the 2026 elections fast approaching, Nyendo-Mukungwe is shaping up to be a battleground constituency. As Muyizzi and Mpuuga prepare for a fierce contest, voters will ultimately decide whether to retain the experienced legislator or usher in a new political era under Muyizzi’s leadership.
